CHLOE
“Chloe Stephens, I remember you.” Matt Wright approached me with Hayley Martin on his arm. I remembered her movies and television show from when she was younger. I’d seen her at the Wrights’ a couple of times growing up.
“Hi,” I said smiling.
“Chloe here was one of the best soccer players in her high school,” Matt said.
I waved him off. “Hardly. Lucas was good.”
Matt chuckled. “He was.”
“How would you know how I played? None of the Wrights played soccer.”
“I went to Lucas’s games.” Richard Wright approached, looking dashing as ever. “I missed football, and I made Matthew go to the pitch with me to watch Lucas’s games. Lucas didn’t really have anyone rooting for him in the stands. Plus, Matthew here loves everything sports related.”
Matt nodded. “It’s true. I might look into soccer. I might need a break from baseball.”
“Football, Matthew,” Richard corrected.
Matt rolled his eyes. “We’re in America, Dad. It’s soccer.”
We all laughed.
“Chloe, it’s delightful to see you,” Richard said. “You look beautiful.”
I couldn’t help but smile. Richard was so charming and British.
“Since Matthew isn’t going to introduce me, I’m Hayley.”
Matt gave her an incredulous look. “She knows who you are, you’ve met before.”
Hayley blushed. “I have? I’m sorry. I’m not always…there’s a lot of people around here when I visit.”
I waved her off. “Oh please, don’t worry about it. It was only a couple of times and you’re the former movie star. I just grew up around here.”
“What do you now?” Hayley asked.
“U.S. Marshal.”
“You’ll fit in with Rick and Alicia then,” Hayley said.
I stole a glance at Lucas who was talking with Chuck and Aubrey across the way. It was so strange being in the same space as him. I could still feel the burn of his lips against mine. I wanted more. But as much as I wanted to get him into bed, there was something else burning inside of me, wanting more, but I wasn’t sure what I wanted more of.
We moved through the crowds opposite of each other, talking and laughing, but we kept locking gazes, checking in with each other. The crowd grew more and more until it was difficult to move around.
I got a bottle of water from the bar and a hand glided over the small of my back.
“I feel like I’ve missed all the catching up,” Lucas murmured against my ear.
I smiled. “What would you like to know?”
“Everything. I’ve missed seven years of your life, and I hate it. Why didn’t we stay in touch?”
I closed my eyes feeling the ache of having to leave again soon. “I don’t know. It was too hard to get away and take a piece with me. I needed a clean break at the time.”
“What about now?” he asked.
“I want to have an answer for you, but I don’t know. There were so many reasons why I left. And being back here, my shoulders are already tired from hunching.”
“You stopped hunching hours ago.”
“I don’t hunch at all when I’m not here.”
There was something burning in his brown eyes.
